Without greater efforts to shift to a low-carbon economy, global coal consumption will rise to an all-time high in 2022 and remain high for several years after that, according to a report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) on Dec. 16.
High gas prices following the conflict with Ukraine and subsequent supply disruptions have led some countries to switch to cheaper coal this year, the report said.
High temperatures and droughts in some areas have also pushed up electricity demand and reduced hydropower generation, while nuclear power generation remains weak, particularly in Europe, where France had to shut down reactors for maintenance, the report said.
The IEA's annual report on coal predicts that global coal use will grow 1.2 per cent this year, topping 8 billion tonnes in a single year for the first time, a record previously set in 2013.
The report also expects such coal consumption to continue until 2025, as reductions in use in mature markets are offset by continued strong demand for coal in emerging Asian economies.
That means coal will continue to be by far the largest single source of carbon dioxide emissions in the global energy system, the report said.
The report notes that major coal producers India and Indonesia are set to produce record volumes of coal this year, but despite the easy money that coal companies are making from higher prices, there is no sign of a surge in investment into export-oriented coal projects.
'This reflects a cautious attitude by investors and mining companies on the medium - and long-term outlook for coal,' the report said.
