According to Lt. Tim Tosney of the LAPD's Devon Division, "The Prius was targeted because its converters were easily accessible. We saw the staff remove them in less than a minute."
According to NICB, an "aggressive" thief can steal 10 to 15 converters a day, making dense cars a gold mine for thieves. The same report states that nearly 25,000 converter thefts were reported in the United States between 2008 and 2015, a 23 percent increase over 2008. Wheels and rims are also common targets for thieves.
