Japanese companies Marubeni and Sompo Japan have signed a memorandum of understanding to properly reuse and recycle used solar panels. Sompo, an insurer, guarantees used solar panels for defects, and Marubeni, an integrated trading company, will start selling them in 2023.
The collaboration will establish a system in which Marubeni will first examine the performance and reuse feasibility of the used PV modules and put the details on an information management platform. Marubeni will collect the historical information of the panels from the time of disposal. According to the company's statement, the traceability and authenticity of this information will be verified using blockchain technology.
If Marubeni considers the old components to be of sufficient quality for reuse, Sompo will provide a second use guarantee, i.e., a cooperative defect guarantee. But the companies did not disclose the length of the guarantee.
Marubeni plans to start selling second-life panels in 2023, and said in a statement: "This marks the first time in Japan that a defect guarantee has been offered for used solar panels through a platform."
Panels that do not pass the reusable inspection will be recycled and will be acquired and recycled through subsidiary Sompo Risk Management. The recycling process will be carried out in collaboration with Marubeni's Information management platform. "Raw materials are reused and recycled through the program, which is expected to be recycled and reduce the amount of industrial waste sent to landfills," the statement said.
Established in June 2021, the information management platform is part of the Japanese Ministry of Environment's Resource Recovery initiative.
