Africa is rich in renewable energy resources, with solar, wind and hydro energy reserves accounting for 40 per cent, 32 per cent and 12 per cent of the global total, respectively, and with great potential for renewable energy development. Actively promoting the construction of renewable energy projects
At present, many African countries are actively promoting the construction of renewable energy projects. Tunisia's National Energy Management Agency recently announced that it will develop renewable energy as a national strategy, and strive to increase the proportion of renewable energy power generation in total power generation from less than 3% in 2022 to 24% by 2025. Tunisia has more than 3,000 hours of sunshine throughout the year, and the government plans to build eight solar photovoltaic power stations and eight wind power stations with a total installed capacity of 800 megawatts (MW) and 600 MW, respectively, during the period 2023-2025. According to Niger's latest strategic energy plan, 30 per cent of the country's electricity will come from renewable sources by 2030, and installed capacity will increase at least fivefold to 2,000 megawatts. Niger's Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Renewable Energies recently said that Niger will fully develop the abundant wind energy in the southern region to build the country's first wind farm, with a designed installed capacity of 250 megawatts (MW), consisting of 60 wind turbines, which are scheduled to be connected to the grid in 2025. Upon completion, the project is expected to increase the Niger's power generation capacity by more than 40 per cent and also enable it to export electricity to neighbouring countries at more competitive prices.
Renewable energy generation in Africa is set to grow by more than 60 billion kilowatt-hours between 2023 and 2025, increasing from 24 per cent in 2021 to 30 per cent of total electricity generation in 2025, according to the Electricity Market Report 2023 published by the International Energy Agency. A report in the Rwandan newspaper The New Times noted, "Africa is rich in renewable energy. Africa's rapid economic development in recent years has faced the real demand for energy transformation, which provides a broad space for the continent to develop renewable energy."
