2022 was the hottest year on record in the UK after a year of heatwaves and the fewest rainfall, the Met Office said.
The UK Met Office said in a statement that this year was "the highest annual average temperature in the UK, surpassing the previous record set in 2014 when the average annual temperature was 9.88C", The Guardian reported Wednesday.
Mark McCarthy, head of the Met Office's National Climate Information Centre, said: "2022 was the hottest year on record in the UK and this year has also seen relatively long periods of scorching heat. And every month except December has been warmer than average for the whole year."
McCarthy noted that this summer, large parts of England and Wales have experienced drought, high and heat waves and scant rainfall. A similar pattern can be seen in north-western Europe. This year is also likely to be the hottest on record in France, the country's national weather service said.
July also broke the previous record for the warmest month in the UK, exceeding 40C for the first time, and was the driest month on record in the south, figures show. An analysis published in July by an international team of researchers also suggested that human-induced climate change had increased the incidence of heatwaves in Britain at least tenfold this year.
