California will target 90% renewable and zero-carbon energy by 2035
State law sets a target of 60 percent renewable energy by 2030 and 90 percent renewable energy by 2035, with a goal of zero carbon emissions
The bill sets a more aggressive phase for California's progress on clean energy, with a goal of 60 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a new goal of 90 percent renewable energy and zero carbon emissions by 2035.
California currently has 33 percent renewable energy, 25 percent from solar and 8 percent from wind.
Under the bill, state regulators would be required to have unreasonable influence on prices and bills while maintaining and protecting the safe, reliable operation and balance of the electric system.
The bill, known as the Clean Energy, Jobs and Affordability Act (SB-1020), does not define "zero carbon" production.
California set a goal in 2018 to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2026. The new legislation sets longer-term targets of 95 per cent of renewable and zero-carbon electricity sales by 2040 and 100 per cent by 2045, while the latter target remains unchanged from the 2018 target. The goal of this legislation is to serve the retail sale of electricity to end users in California.
Government agencies will face a more pressing goal, as one of the legislation requires them to source 100% of their electricity from renewable and zero-carbon sources by 2035. Local governments must accelerate action to achieve the national target of decarbonizing the power sector.
