In a new report, Spain's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Digital Planning predicts that solar power will become the country's largest source of electricity by the end of the next decade. According to a vision drawn up by the Spanish government, the cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity in the country could even reach 77 gigawatts by the end of 2030.
Under the new report's planning vision, the country's installed PV capacity will reach 77 gigawatts by the end of 2030 under the best-case scenario, and solar PV will become the cheapest source of electricity, generating 47.1 terawatt hours.
In addition, wind power will reach 31 terawatt-hours, combined cycle plants will generate 24.5 terawatt-hours, hydro 23 terawatt-hours and cogeneration 8.5 terawatt-hours. In this scenario, renewables would account for 70 percent of Spain's electricity mix, while solar photovoltaic technology would reach a cumulative installed capacity of about 77 gigawatts, followed by wind power of 47.5 gigawatts.
The report also lays out a sustainable transition scenario in which solar becomes the cheapest source of electricity in the country by 2030, but with 40 terawatt hours of electricity and no storage deployed. In this case, however, renewables still account for 67 per cent of domestic electricity generation. The 7 terawatt-hours missing from the optimal scenario are partially replaced by coal (4 terawatt-hours).
Commenting on the scenario with the highest penetration of solar and renewable energy, the Spanish government said the increase in its share would significantly reduce the cost of electricity generation, resulting in savings of around 9.6 billion euros.
The Spanish solar energy association UNEF welcomed the report's findings, claiming that the Spanish government had finally acknowledged the high value of photovoltaic technology. "With photovoltaic installations expected to increase by a factor of ten by 2030 compared to current levels, this is a key opportunity to enable citizens to access cheaper energy and achieve a more stable development pattern," said Josef Donoso, president of the association.
