In a paper published in the latest issue of the journal Small Methods, engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say they have developed an ultra-lightweight solar cell that can quickly and easily turn any surface into a power source. Thinner than a human hair, the solar cell, attached to a piece of fabric, weighs just one percent as much as traditional solar panels but produces 18 times more electricity per kilogram. It can be integrated into ship sails, disaster relief tents and tarps, the wings of drones and surfaces of various buildings.
To produce solar cells, the MIT Organic and Nanostructured Electronics Lab team used nanomaterials in the form of e-ink. In the nanoclean room, they used an extruded coater to deposit layers of nanoelectronic material onto a 3-micron thick substrate. Then, using screen printing, they printed electrodes and completed the solar module. Then, the printing module, which is about 15 microns thick, was stripped off the plastic substrate to form an ultra-light solar module.
But the thin, free-standing solar modules are difficult to handle and tear easily, making them difficult to deploy. To do this, the team needed to find a lightweight, flexible substrate to attach the solar cells to, and they eventually found a composite called Dyneema, which weighs just 13 grams per square meter. By adding a layer of curing glue just a few micrometers thick, they attached solar panels to Mighty Horse, resulting in an ultra-light and strong solar structure.
Tests showed that the free-standing solar cells produced 730 watts of power per kilogram, or about 370 watts per kilogram if attached to a high-strength "Mighty Horse" fabric, 18 times more than conventional solar cells. Moreover, the fabric solar cell retains more than 90 percent of its initial generating capacity even after being rolled up and unrolled more than 500 times. This method of battery production can be expanded to produce flexible cells with larger areas.
However, the researchers stress that while their solar cells are lighter and more flexible than conventional batteries, the carbon-based organic materials used to make them can interact with moisture and oxygen in the air, potentially reducing their performance, so another material needs to be wrapped to protect them from the environment, and they are currently developing an ultra-thin packaging solution.
