Power cuts in China affect solar panel production
China installed 37.73 GW of solar capacity in the first seven months of the year, according to official estimates, as it struggles to cope with power rationing in Sichuan province
China's National Energy Administration said 37.73 GW of new solar capacity was installed between January and the end of July, bringing the cumulative total to 34,351 GW. The world's largest solar market added 6.85 gigawatts of solar capacity in July alone, the data show. Total investment in solar power reached 77.3 billion yuan ($11.3 billion) in the first seven months of 2022, up 304 percent year on year, the NEA said.
JinkoSolar said its manufacturing operations in Sichuan province have been affected by the provincial government's power cuts. The province is suffering from power shortages due to persistent high temperatures and drought, forcing some solar companies to suspend production. Last week, the provincial government urged 19 of 21 cities to suspend all industrial production for six days to save electricity for normal consumption. JinkoSolar said it was uncertain how long the brownouts would last because of the drought's negative impact on hydropower.
Golden Solar specified how much its 54 million share options issued in January would affect its results. Earlier this month, the company warned that a loss of 3.84 million yuan in the first half of last year would widen further, due in large part to an expected amortization cost of 77.8 million yuan related to stock options. The solar production equipment supplier said last week that it expects a first-half net loss of between 100 million yuan and 110 million yuan.
TCL Electronics said last week that its small-scale solar business, which only started operations in the second quarter, had first-half revenue of HK $172 million and a gross profit of HK $14.2 million (US $1.81 million). Its parent company posted a first-half net profit of HK $293 million.
